aroma and savor of their fruits, who, pray tell, besides the devil would find the sordid and horrible product of animal and human entrails pleasing?: this is the quid of the problem!: and who will some presumptuous smart-ass democrat among you will be so bold as to ask: don’t Your Gracious Majesties eat?: daily papers, magazines, and news broadcasts teach us the contrary: so tell us then: what becomes of the food that your royal person consumes if it does not evacuate it?: ah, you fops and pedants, that is precisely what I was leading up to!: if the metabolism of the vegetable kingdom is different from that of animals and humans, what’s so strange about the fact that the metabolism of your just and exalted sovereign is also different?: while the republican and plebeian eye secretes corruption and impurity, that of your venerable dynasty exhales fragrance and harmony: the Lord, in His infinite wisdom, has ordained that terrestrial creatures shall rise above the animal condition and its impure secretions, in accordance with and in proportion to their merits, until they attain the ideal state of the saints and the blessed in Paradise, whose residues, Saint Bernard tells us, are transformed into a sweet, refined liquid, like unto myrrh and frankincense and the essence of musk: God, through His Divine Mediatrix, elevates His creatures step by step to the fragrant superior state, and in recompense for the services done Him by our holy and devout family, He has permitted it to rise one step higher on the steep stairway that leads from stench to perfume, from quadruped to angel, and has proved it in the eyes of the world by means of a simple and edifying miracle: the act of expelling, with neither sound nor fury, in a noble and exquisitely refined manner, a highly varied assortment of aromas, essences, and balsams which, artistically presented in little vials and bottles designed by our most talented artists, may be acquired at a price that none of our competitors can come close to meeting, in the principle pharmacies and toilet-goods shops throughout the country: their inimitable and exemplary quality has immediately earned them the public’s favor
