Professor Deng presented an outline of the current problems in the Sudan, which would be (over-)simplified as a conflict between the primarily arabized and islamicized North of the country, and the traditionally African South, a division historically reinforced by British colonial policy: after independence the aim of the North had been to correct this separatism, while for the South northern domination had been seen as the replacing of British colonialism by the internal Arab variant.
