The Department of Political Affairs is entrusted with three basic functions: to support the Secretary-General in the discharge of his global responsibilities for preventive diplomacy and peacemaking in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Charter and under the mandates given to him by the General Assembly and the Security Council; to provide secretariat services to the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Trusteeship Council and a number of related intergovernmental bodies; and to implement the programme on disarmament.
