and impure syrups to drain away: little by little the sugar at the top grows lighter, but sheer good will and a good heart are not sufficient to do the job: isn’t it true that one must also pour in a mixture of water and clay, so that the water will filter through the sugar loaf and carry away the syrup that adheres to the crystals?: well, that is precisely what the plantation boss does with you when he assigns you humble and thankless tasks: he does so in order that the dark color of your souls may be washed away and in order that you may turn a lighter color: and just as the purging of the sugar lasts thirty or forty days, the purging of the soul may last thirty or forty years: but what does this ridiculously short period of time matter in view of the immortal glory that the Eternal offers you!: therefore do not curse your fate or lose heart: all these tribulations are necessary for the complete whitening of your souls: one day they will be put out in the sun to air like a sugar loaf: then the Plantation Boss on High will come along with his machete and slice open the loaf with one stroke, from the dark tip at the top to the white layer at the bottom: and it will be like the day of the Last Judgment: the black souls will be lost forever, like the burnt sugar that is thrown away: the residues, full of filth and impurities, that no one would want to buy: the middle part of the loaf is the pale brown sugars that will have to be purged and boiled over again until there remains in their souls not even the slightest trace of sin: and the clear lumps at the base, the fine,
