He had been demoted and taken from active flight status because of mental health issues and multiple alcohol-related infractions. He had been sent to a weather station in Shaktoolik on Norton Sound, Alaska, and later finally discharged from the Air Force. From there he came back to New York and found employment as a security guard at the UN through an acquaintance.
