Mahayanists have no desire either to close or pare down their canon, because its irrepressible proliferation leaves the door open for fresh experiences.32
Their meditative experiences had convinced Mahayanists that what they called the dharmas, the categories that are essential to our ordinary experience of the world, had no solid foundation: the world was essentially ‘empty’, lacking in substance.
Because the Buddha and the other innumerable Buddhas and bodhisattvas were still in the world, they could communicate with Mahayanists in dreams and visions.38 The Mahayana scriptures do not narrate historical or empirical facts.
But the Mahayana’s appeal was due in no small measure to its massive scriptural corpus which, if printed in English, would fill 150 volumes.30 Nobody, however, was expected to read all these scriptures and most Mahayanists focus on only one.
Both Theravadins and Mahayanists cultivated a sense of the Buddha’s presence in a disciplined meditative practice known as Buddhanasmrti (‘recollection of the Buddha’).34 In one of the oldest texts of the Pali Canon, the monk Pingiya, now too old to travel with the Buddha, had discovered a way of being in his presence continually: ‘With constant and careful vigilance, it is possible for me to see him with my mind as clearly as with my eyes, in night as well as day.’35 In the fifth century ce, the great Theravadin exegete Buddhaghosa would instruct the meditator to go to a solitary place and call the Buddha to mind, dwelling systematically and in detail on his physical features with such concentration that he eventually becomes one with him. In this way, ‘he conquers fear and dread … He comes to feel as if he were living in the Master’s presence, and his [own] body … becomes as worthy of veneration as a shrine room.’36 An early Mahayana scripture explains that this practice hastens enlightenment and that by living in seclusion and focusing solely on the Buddha’s person, Buddhists could acquire a more extensive vision:
