Joseph, however, remains Jacob’s favourite, although he acknowledges that Joseph’s artistic gifts are not of the highest order: ‘It is a charming blessing but not the highest, the sternest … Play and playing it was, familiar, friendly, appealingness, approaching salvation yet not quite seriously a calling or a gift.’ But Jacob’s words, when he blesses Joseph, evoke the unification that Mann desires for the world: ‘Be blessed as you are blessed, with the blessing of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, with blessings gushing from the breast of heaven and the womb of earth!’46 This deliberately refers back to the opening of the tetralogy, when, discussing an ancient Gnostic myth of the fall of humanity, the narrator concludes that redemption might lie in the interpenetration of heaven and earth, the sanctification of each by the other.47 At the end of the tetralogy, it is Joseph the artist who embodies this blessing.
