Mr. Monod-Gayraud (France), speaking on behalf of the European Union and the associated countries Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, said that the European Union shared many of the concerns expressed by the Special Rapporteur in his report on the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the right of peoples to self-determination (A/55/334) and, in particular, the effect of the activities on the duration and nature of armed conflict, and condemned without reservation the participation of mercenaries in terrorist acts.
