This codification of English civil liberties secured that “[n]o free man shall be taken or imprisoned or disseised* or outlawed or exiled or in any way ruined, nor will we go or send against him, except by the lawful judgement [sic] of his peers or by the law of the land.”14 In other words, neither life, liberty, nor property could be taken from anyone without judgment by the person’s peers and then only by due process of the law of the land.
