Gay New York is a stirring work when it is read as an homage to all those who struggled to live their lives as they wished, to have a livable life—it is a hymn to a kind of gay resistance that operated on a daily basis, obstinate, tenacious, and inventive in its opposition to the power of dominant culture, a power that was always a threat, ready to abuse gay people, humiliate them, repress them, to track them and hunt them down, to strike them, wound them, arrest them, and put them in prison.
