From my perspective, at least initially, when only the Serbs and the Croats were involved, it was like the Syldavians and Bordurians in The Adventures of Tintin: mustachioed villagers wearing embroidered vests and caps, and inclined, after a good drink or two, to get out their rifles and kill one another in the name of ancient feuds. One such feud was over who owned a field that the Serbs, for reasons that are difficult for anyone else to understand, consider the most sacred place in their history because it was the scene of their bitterest defeat. From afar, the situation seemed as discouraging as the one in Romania; there was reason to believe that the euphoria of 1989 had waned considerably. But I didn’t have a firm opinion, so I listened to the discussions without taking part.
Al principio, cuando sólo se trataba de los serbios y los croatas, eran para mí como los sildavos y los bordurios en Tintín: pueblerinos bigotudos que llevan turbante y chalecos bordados, y proclives, cuando han bebido, a descolgar sus fusiles para matarse unos a otros en nombre de querellas muy antiguas, como la posesión de un campo que los serbios, de un modo difícil de comprender para otros que no sean ellos, consideran el lugar más sagrado de su historia porque fue el teatro de su derrota más dolorosa. Parecía, de lejos, tan desalentador como Rumanía, había motivos para pensar que la euforia del año 1989 había decaído pero, a falta de una opinión bien informada, yo escuchaba las conversaciones sin intervenir en ellas.
